Melissa Rose comes from generations of entrepreneurs and though the entrepreneurial bug hit her when she was young with scattered youth businesses, she never really pursued it until later in life. At age 20, after taking some marketing courses in college, she saw an opportunity to create marketing collateral for some local small businesses and with her dad’s help, she formed her own corporation. Her first big client was a medical company where she was contracted to create a marketing plan for their five outpatient clinics.
That experience changed her and redirected her career path. She felt empowered and in control of her decisions and saw a world of opportunity. Over the years she learned to balance risk and saw the connection between her work and rewards. She didn’t have to follow processes and protocol that didn’t make sense and she could create a business that was based around the needs of her customers.
Melissa kept that business she formed for almost 20 years. In 2008, after struggling with her tween daughters’ performance in school, she came up with a way to teach her accountability through entrepreneurship. Knowing how much her own experience influenced her, she knew that if done right, she could teach her daughter valuable skill sets while showing her how to take advantage of all of the opportunities before her. By the middle of 2009, she launched Biz in a Boxx, a patent-pending, youth entrepreneurial product that teaches kids, starting at the age of seven, how to start and run their own businesses. And it’s the same program her own daughter, who is now 15, used to start her three budding businesses.
