Summer’s on the Way! What Will Your Kids Do?
The time has come for many kids to start counting down to their summer vacations. What plans do you have for your little ones, tweens, or teens? Summer is an awesome time for kids to start a business or grow an existing one!
During the summer, most kids have hours of uninterrupted time that can be used wisely to sharpen their entrepreneurial skills.
This is also a peak time when there are tons of opportunities that can be used as business ideas. From running the familiar lemonade stand to managing animal-care businesses to selling the latest and greatest gadgets, children are taking the world by storm as the new generation of entrepreneurs.
This week on the #CEO Kids Tweet Chat we will be talking to/tweeting with author and mom Denise Gadson. She shares our values and love for entrepreneurship! In her first children’s book project, Penelope’s World Famous Cookies, Denise tells the story of Penelope, a little girl who turns what appears to be just another boring summer into an opportunity to start her own profitable business baking and selling cookies. In the beginning of the story, Penelope wishes she could have more to do over the summer like her friends. After a dinner time conversation with her parents, Penelope comes away with the idea—and the confidence—to start her own business. The story educates children (and adults) on how to start a business in such a way that is fun and entertaining. The book is a great way to introduce business concepts to children and tweens. There is even a small lesson on charitable giving, as Penelope donates some of the proceeds from her business to two of her favorite charities, the Make-a-Wish Foundation and Habitat for Humanity.
At the end of the book, there are straight-forward questions that are designed to create a simple business plan to help kids bring their business ideas to life. Let this summer be a time for your child to connect with his or her inner entrepreneurial spirit. Who knows? You could be raising a CEO!
