Can Your Child Compete & Lead the Team?

I work with entrepreneurs that begin start-up companies. These are the founders and CEOs.  Many mistakenly believe effort is what it takes to reap rewards, but effort alone is never enough. Yet others believe it is just a technical or innate skill that brings success, such as a high I.Q. or a particular talent, but that’s not enough either. One talent I see missing from their bag of skills is the ability to compete and perform as a member of a team. They’ve never been trained to compete. They’ve never learned that when you enter the playing field, you had better have the intent to win. They’ve never learned that sometimes you have to live in the moment. That when you are swimming in a race, your entire world is that lane; there isn’t a thought of the party or anything else later in the day. They haven’t learned to perform under pressure. They haven’t learned how to build a team or how an effective team functions.

Spotlight on Greyson MacLean, Owner of BrickStix

Sarah:  Please tell me, how you got started and where other kids starting a business and parents can find out more info about you.

Greyson:  When I was nine I came up with the idea for BrickStix. I was playing with my LEGO bricks wishing I could add decals to my build, and take them off when I was finished. The stickers that come with the brick sets are permanent. I never put them on, because you can’t change your mind later. My frustration led to a conversation with my mother about what I thought should exist. That’s when I came up with the idea for BrickStix. BrickStix are reusable, removable, restickable cling decals for LEGO, MEGA BLOKS and other plastic bricks. I have a blog on the BrickStix website (www.brickstix.com). You can also find me on Twitter and Facebook!

How To Stop Dumping Your Stress Onto Your Kids

Now that the holidays are over and you’re back in the swing of things has the stress of life returned? Are rushed days triggering short fuses again? Is the joy of the holidays still with you or are you working hard, feeling frustrated, sad, tired and maybe angry? Has the stress begun to leak on to the kids again? If so, read on.

Who Has Time to Relax?

Many experts and articles suggest you take time for yourself, do some breathing, find your passion, have a date night, or add some “me time” to your day. Those are all great ideas; I’ve suggested many of them myself. Even though those are all great ideas, I find I never use them. Why? Those suggestions all require that I do something. I don’t know about you, but when I come home frustrated, angry, sad or tired, I don’t have an ounce of energy left in me to do one more thing—I’m spent and ready to pounce! This week’s tip is very simple, very heartfelt, and reduces parental stress!

Interview with Author Diane De Las Casas, Mom of Young Chef Eliana

Sarah: When did you notice that your daughter was interested in making money and being in business?

Diane: Eliana has always been a self-starter. She showed an early interest in cooking – at four years old! Every Christmas and Birthday, she requested gifts that had to do with cooking. In fact, this Christmas, she wants a Ninja, a mandolin, and a tortilla press! What kid asks for those kinds of gifts?!!

Sarah: How did you go about introducing him/her to mentors?

Diane: I am one of her biggest mentors but whenever we dine fine, she always asks to meet the executive chef. She has met and made friends with many chefs over the years. They are very encouraging and impressed with her drive.

No Resolutions – Just a Money Revolution!

If you are wondering if your kids will be financially responsible or financially healthy as young adults and into their retirement years, first ask yourself what you are doing to help them be financially responsible and what they learn from your own financial behavior.

I have always advocated teaching your kids the value of a dollar as early as possible, to prepare them for their future. Especially in an environment of rising college tuition costs and lack of career opportunities, the guidance you give your kids today matters more than ever.

When you show your kids that you are financially responsible and send them a clear message about how to save, spend and allocate money, they obtain an accurate and useful understanding about money as opposed to a childlike fantasy about where food, shelter and especially money comes from.

Meet the CEO Kids Featured in The Parents’ Guide to Raising CEO Kids: Brandi Thomas

Brandi Thomas

ballroombybrandi.com

Brandi Thomas began ballroom dancing at age nine with her grandfather, just to pass the time. The two of them gave demonstrations promoting ballroom dance, and for several years Brandi volunteered teaching ballroom dance to students and adults. At age sixteen, she
petitioned USA Dance, the national organization for ballroom athletes, to be allowed to teach for profit. It was then that Ballroom By Brandi became a reality. Brandi is an exceptional choreographer. She specializes in the first dance for the bride and groom, choreographs for LSU Ballroom Dance Club and Tiger Dancesport, and continues to compete.
