5 Keys to Gaining Publicity as a CEO Kid & a CONTEST!!!
All businesses need some publicity to keep going as well as to gain credibility. So how can you and your CEO kid find opportunities for gaining publicity for your kid owned and operated business? Here are some ideas:
1. Don’t be afraid to give anything and everything a try. There are obviously tons and tons of great ideas out there, there are tons of magazines, newspapers, websites and television shows or newscasts seeking stories. Who says you can’t be the story that they are seeking. So the first key in gaining publicity is being willing to give it a try as well as to get connected to who is looking for information about what you do. I would recommend signing up for a HARO so you will know anytime there are news requests coming out so you can be among the first to respond.
2. Write a press release or have one written for you for each project. One of the stepping stones to gaining publicity in radio, newspaper and television is to submit press releases. It may take some work on your part or some expense to pay someone, but a press release can be a strong tool in gaining publicity for yourself. There are press release templates all over the web, as well as press release banks and submission sites that you can use to distribute them.
3. Don’t be afraid to make contacts personally. The written word is powerful, such as the press release option we just mentioned, but sometimes a good old fashioned phone call or personal introduction can go a bit further. Therefore, don’t be afraid to make contact with news reporters, TV stations, and radio stations to help gain yourself some much deserved publicity. You might also want to contact high ranking websites and blogs in your niche and ask them to review your product or service. As you are making contacts be sure to start putting together a database of the people you talked to, what they said, and how responsive they were to you. Your contacts will be KEY as you grow your business!
4. Enter contests. Sometimes these can truly bring you the exposure you’re looking for. Things like being named “Young Entrepreneur of the Year” can get you some major publicity. Search online for other contests that you can enter that fit into your “niche” and do your best. In fact I would recommend setting up a few Google Alerts with labels such as “young entrepreneur contest”, kid entrepreneur contest”, or “young CEO contest”. Be sure to put things in the quotes or you will get tons of information you are NOT looking for.
5. Realize it isn’t always what you do or don’t do. You have to realize news is news and sometimes the top story about a celebrity will easily trump your story. Don’t be discouraged or disappointed just keep on doing what you do best. Make contacts on a regular basis, be consistent with your press releases and other information, and you will surely get the exposure you are meant to receive.
